1-800-Flowers is offering an... interesting arrangement for the upcoming holiday aptly named the St. Patrick's Day Flower Basket. Here's the kicker though - the florists apparently got lazy and just threw in some potatoes. If you like to think of everything as a conspiracy (like I do) perhaps there is something even more sinister afoot - like the glamorization of the deaths of millions of Irish people in the mid 1800's.
As someone of Irish ancestry (I can be whatever I want on the internet), I am offended. It's like saying "I know the Irish Potato Famine killed a million through starvation and disease; and another million emigrated from Ireland leaving the country in shambles - but look: there is a bow with clovers and some cheap flowers thrown in, that will be 40 - 50 bucks (plus shipping)". In all honesty, I think the cost of the item, when you factor in shipping, might be just as offensive as the message this arrangement sends.
This basket is so wrong on so many levels, well besides the fun™ play on An Gorta Mór ("The Great Hunger"). Take for instance - who the f%#@ (excuse my Irish) wants potatoes with thier flowers?! What are we supposed to do with them? Are they subtly asking the recipient to stew them up with the green carnations, Bells of Ireland, daisy poms and monte casino that are included?
Ugh.
